When we plan our cutting for a year we try to take the
customer’s needs and our capacity into consideration. If the customer’s requirements are large we
schedule a part of the cutting each month.
The scheduling is designed to share our cutting capacity fairly among
our customers and allow both the customer and
The scheduling is on a “best efforts” basic and in no
way a guarantee or contract of quantity or delivery date. Because we cannot guarantee quantity or
delivery date we expect only the “best efforts” from our customer as to the
quantity he will buy and an acceptable date for delivery.
If the customer cannot use the staves we do not expect
to force him to take them. If we cannot
cut the staves as scheduled we do not expect the customer to try to force
us. All that is expected from both
parties is their “best efforts”.
Because this scheduling takes several months it is
usually done 3 to 4 months in advance of the first deliveries. If the order is large the planning is 12 to
16 months in advance of the final deliveries.
So that the customer can plan his cash flow I give him an estimated
price for the material but no contract or guarantee that we will be able to
maintain that price throughout the longer planned delivery periods.
With long delivery periods the price must be free to
change to reflect changing conditions in the wood or log market. If the customer has an opportunity to
purchase at a better price all we expect is reasonable notice to cancel future
cutting and take what is already cut. If
we are loosing money we expect to give the customer notice and stop
cutting. If a price adjustment will allow
the scheduled work to continue then future material is cut at the new price.
We do not change the price often and we expect our
customers not to be continually negotiating but there must occasionally be
price adjustments, both up and down.
Sincerely,
Wayne McMillan
